Nine out of ten times, when we are wanted for Test Automation, the interest is the development of automated test scripts for creating robots in place of the user in the evaluation of transactions and reports with the highest possible coverage, ideally 100%.

Solutions based on Selenium, some technology equivalent or built from it. That is, the objective is to have the test code for all transactions in automated test scripts, simulating a human operator interacting with the software, evaluating the responses and reporting the results. Additionally, they want these automated test scripts running automatically on regression tests to evaluate whether what worked continues to work.

There are three main misconceptions in these visions of solution.

The first is to seek 100% coverage, because user interfaces are volatile and this implies constant adjustments in automated test scripts, which end up not presenting the expected ROI.

Another is to focus investments on external automated test scripts and disregard, that Test Automation includes internal testing; in particular, automated integration unit testing.

Finally, believe that automated testing eliminates the need for human effort. Automated tests tend not to discover new defects.
